Pattern & Surface

April 1 – May 17
Opening Reception: Wed April 1, 5 – 8pm
Artists Talks: April 1, 5:30-6pm

Pattern and Surface features works by three Montana artists, Samantha Briegel, Nerissa Eckerson and Sarah Magar. These three artists create artworks in unique styles using very different techniques, yet all three use surface decoration and pattern to enliven and inspire.

Ceramic artist, Samantha Briegel, uses surface design and foam templates to create pieces reminiscent of womens bodies women’s clothing. Aspects of her work are analogous to garment assembly, from cutting and darting her slab-built forms to textile-like surfaces. Although she emphasizes form, her surface patterns bring the forms to life. Samantha received her BFA from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, has interned at the Archie Bray and is now studying ceramics at the University of Montana as a post-baccalaureate.

Missoula artist, Sarah Magar is inspired by her day-to-day experiences, dreams, memories and curiosity about life. On her delicate porcelain vessels and wall pillows, she blends comical or satirical narratives in vivid colors with grace and vulnerability. She adds to the narratives by using tactile surface elements and playful characters. Sarah is currently working on her BFA exhibit at the University of Montana.

Butte mixed-media artist, Nerissa Eckerson works primarily with drawing, painting and printmaking. Her abstracted western landscapes create imaginary places that feel somehow familiar. Her white and black, geometric mountains drawn on brown paper bring to mind Asian textiles and patterns. Nerissa completed her BFA at the University of Montana and currently works as a gallery assistant in Butte.

Food, wine, coffee and tea will be served from 6:00 to 8:00
Doors open at 5:00
