Why Take This Workshop?

First of all, to have fun!

In this 2-day workshop we will explore the art of self portraits; why people make self portraits and how to express your essence and emotions through self portraits. Each participant will use photography and printmaking to complete several absolutely powerful self portraits.

A pre-workshop meeting the evening before the workshop will consist of a presentation by the instructor with slides and real-life examples of self-portraits by artists as well as past students. We will also take some time to get to know each other as a group and talk about what it means to create genuine self-portraits that express our inner selves. This evening is important to nurture trust and inspiration so you all can dive right into the project the first day.

Workshop Description

Day One of the Women’s Self-Portrait Workshop focuses on photographic self-portraits. Working in pairs and individually, you will stage and create a series of portraits expressing whatever aspects of your inner self you choose. This includes 8×10 prints of at least two of your best images.

Day Two (the following weekend) will consist of transforming your choice of your own images into a drypoint plate and printing several varied images from those plates, on the studio etching presses. You will be amazed at your results, whether you consider yourself an artist or not … no matter what your experience of photography and printmaking is.

Both the photographic and drypoint print self portraits can be extremely powerful. Maureen’s gift is guiding you in the entire process, from imagining ways to convey your self-image … to manipulating the photos. From the technical aspects of drypoint printmaking to how to ink the plates for fabulous, evocative results.

Just a reminder that we do have scholarships, funded by generous donors, patrons and several events we hold each year to raise donations. If you are living lightly and are interested in the workshop, please ask by contacting Maureen at the gallery (phone, walk in, or email ) and we will make it happen for you. We don’t want anyone left out of this creative adventure.
