Paul Guillemette

I have recently returned to my first love, Clay! My ideas have led me in many directions with different materials over the past 10 or so years, but I knew I would get back to clay someday.

These first attempts are largely based on what was in front of me for the past few years in my small isolated COVID world, so, a house, a cat, a friends’ chickens and dog, the deer and ducks that frequent my sister’s yard, a neighbor barbecuing.

Artist Statement

The art I make with found materials – primarily wood – is initially inspired in the moment of finding. Coming across beauty in unexpected places at no particular time stirs something deep inside me. What I do with the materials back in my studio takes many different directions. I seek to reveal that beauty in ways that can be funny, metaphorical, ironic or literal, and the result contains its own narrative: from living tree with an intricate grain of capillaries, or a cheap and useful material, or seemingly useless trash … to a thing of pure, deep beauty.

Jewelry: I use found wood and resin in most of my jewelry. I leave it natural, or with the spatters of paint that are found on it – or sometimes I add my own color. Often you can see the rings of the tree, the grain of the wood – or the scars of the wood’s previous use. The chains I use are gold filled or sterling silver and the ring blanks and pendant trays are coated brass.
