About John Andrew
John Andrew is a Helena native and graduate of Helena High School and Carroll College. John is semi-retired and currently works part time as a labor and employment law mediator. It was in 8th grade shop class that John was introduced to wood turning. He vowed to return to the craft when grown up and did so about 20 years ago. Through self- teaching and lots of trial and error what you now see is the product of his efforts.
I work mostly on woods that come from local trees — and most of those are diseased and have to be cut down. I gain deep satisfaction by giving new life to old trees as works of art. Turning bowls requires patience and an eye for the natural grain of a tree. It takes years to sufficiently dry a chunk of trunk to the point that it can be turned on a lathe and made into something of beauty and grace. My bowls are food-safe, though I don’t recommend using liquids or acid foods in them. Customers have used the bowls for dry foods such as chips, crackers, breads, fruit and nuts. Or just enjoy the bowls as works of art, choosing not to fill the hollow and obscure the beautiful grain.
