A Group Exhibition of Works on Paper

Paper

From its early origins in China and its use for books and documents, paper has evolved to become the support for drawings, plans and schematics and more recently, to being an art medium on its own. Printmakers, painters, collage artists and sculptors have claimed paper as a fine art medium in itself.

What’s in this show?

Our group exhibition, PAPERWORK, features nine artists represented by 1+1=1 Gallery. The exhibit includes contemporary artworks in many mediums. All on paper. You will find a variety of materials and creative methods these artists use to express their imagination, humor, social issues, connection to nature, and unique point of view. The resulting collection of unusual pieces is fascinating, compelling and engaging. We hope you find something to make you smile, laugh, open your heart, think again or maybe bring tears to your eyes.

Stop by 1+1=1 in person, to see watercolors, oil paintings, painterly monoprints, mixed media collages and paper sculptures, hand-bound books, drypoint etchings, shellac plate prints and constructed photographs.

More About Our Artists

Michelle Landsaat sent us some of her drypoint-chine colle´prints that are familiar to her Montana collectors. You must see these in person to truly appreciate the level of detail and meticulous work in her hand-pulled prints. But even better, we have three of Michele’s delightful paper cat sculptures to charm you! They actually appear to have jumped out of one of her etchings, such is the detail painted on their surfaces.

Dawn Endean has been working on a new – very fun – body of print work including rabbits with attitude, dancing bears and a sweet dog. They’re all framed and ready to hang. We have brought out some of our favorite pieces by backforty that have been in our flat files, and had them framed for the show. Larry Calkins and Becky Street are artist-collaborators who have worked together for many years making unique monoprints in their distinctive style. Farm animals and jungle animals mingle in piles and tangles and almost-yoga poses, bringing smiles to our faces. Perfect for kids’ rooms (kids of all ages!)

Robin Leenhouts is traveling to Helena from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to bring us a box of fabulous hand-bound books, most of which have Maureen’s prints as covers. There will be just a handful of *gorgeous* large sketchbooks for all our artist friends. These will sell quickly. Come on opening day to grab one and meet Robin.

Brad DeFrees, who has shown at 1+1=1 Gallery for several years now, has been working hard to create a new series of watercolor and oil paintings. He continues to push his expressionistic style and we think you’ll be fascinated by some of his more abstract imagery!

Bonnie Lambert went out on a limb and told us she wanted to make a series of paper “shoes.” Well, we’re totally down with that! Her shoes will be the only artworks on pedestals in this show. We know you’re gonna love them. Bonnie is better known for her constructed photographs, which have been shown previously at 1+1=1 as well as at the Holter Museum of Art. We are excited to have three new photo prints by her in this show.

Although we usually show Carol Montgomery’s linocut prints at 1+1=1, for this exhibit she created a body of new oil paintings on paper. Carol uses broad brush strokes, palette knives and brilliant colors to make abstract landscapes. Her paintings are mounted on cradled wood panels, ready to hang. Maureen Shaughnessy will show some work in her recognizable printmaking style along with some new more experimental pieces. In addition to her popular drypoint etchings, she will also have monoprints (one-off handmade prints) with chine colle´ and mixed media printmaking/collage to round out her new body of work.

 

Continuing Our Year of Education

Curious to learn more about any of these mediums? Quench your curiosity at several artist demos on the weekends and evenings. Our knowledgeable gallery staff are also pretty good at explaining how certain pieces are made. Once you know what really goes into something like an etching with chine collé or traditional book binding, we hope your appreciation for Paperwork will grow!

Artist demos and classes 

• August 27 and 28: Bookbinding workshop taught by Robin Leenhouts and Amanda Determan
• September 3: Maureen will work in her studio from 11am to 3pm, demonstrating several printmaking techniques
• September 24:  Brad DeFrees will set up his easel in the gallery from 11am – 3pm and happily answer questions from observers while he paints
• September 17th: Carol Montgomery will demonstrate her unique linocut print methods in the 1+1=1 Classroom from 1 to 3pm
