STORIES: August 21 – Sept 30, 2021

An Exhibit of Four Storytelling Artists’ New Works

When you’re speaking in the truest, most intimate voice about your life, you are speaking with the universal voice. ~ Cheryl Strayed

STORIES features narrative artworks by four Helena artists

Each of these four artists is a storyteller and an optimist. Each is a magical being who uses narrative in her art, to tell about the human condition through humor, strength, story and beauty. Each speaks through art-making, in a true voice and therefore a universal voice. We invite you to spend time viewing these stories during the exhibit, and hope that you will bring their meaningful ideas into your own lives and homes.
From my point of view, which is that of a storyteller, I see your life as already artful, waiting, just waiting and ready for you to make it art.~Toni Morrison

Betsey Hurd, Susan Mattson, Carol Montgomery and Trudy Skari are the artists in our latest exhibit, STORIES

Sculptor and painter Betsey Hurd, has challenged herself to create a handful of her highly-collected polymorphic beings at a much larger scale for this exhibit. Viewers will encounter person-sized sculpture with mixed human and animal features. Come be inspired by Hurd’s new pieces, to be your own story.
Ceramic sculptor Susan Mattson, has an inherently narrative sculptural style and there is always a story behind each piece. She creates vessels which contain plots, themes, characters, the natural world, and the entire human race. When you look at her fish, bird and mammal vessels, which story will you invent for yourself?
Printmaker, Carol Montgomery, is a prolific storyteller who has been pursuing the themes she illustrates in this exhibit, for over 20 years. Her humorous yet profound linocuts are displayed chronologically so viewers will be inspired to create their own stories from her images.
Ceramic artist, Trudy Skari’s poetic and philosophical sculptures and pottery have graced the gallery exhibits for almost 8 years. Her anthropomorphic characters sometimes even disrupt our stereotypes and remind us to be open to surprise.
