This month we are featuring Nancy Goughnour and Maureen Cole in GalleryTWO. Both are Helena artists who have been showing at 1+1=1 Gallery for years.

Here’s your chance to meet and talk with our TWO artists, in a friendly — warm — and informal atmosphere. Maureen Cole will do a demo showing some of the methods she uses for her tiny houses. Nancy Goughnour will be demonstrating her figurative sculpting techniques. Both artists are eager to talk with visitors about their inspirations and their artwork.

Changes at 1+1=1 Gallery

In early 2019, we renamed part of our Back Gallery and made it a place to celebrate and shine a spotlight on just two of our represented artists at a time. The space is now called “TWO.” Every artist we represent will have a chance to prominently show a body of their work once a year with a reception or open house. We’re very excited about this change to how we introduce you to our artists and their newest fabulous artwork. In addition to TWO, the other part of our Back Gallery continues to show a sampling of work by many of the artists represented by and associated with 1+1=1. Come in as often as you wish — you are likely to find new artworks every time you stop by.

COMPANION: Perspectives on a Shared Life features diverse artworks by four artists

The exhibit runs from Aug 9 through Sep 14, 2019

Please join us for an opening on Friday evening, Aug 9th from 5 to 8pm. Our openings are fun opportunities to meet the artists and hear about their inspirations, motivations and methods. We’ll serve beer, wine, cold beverages and lots of delicious appetizers and desserts.

COMPANION features the work of four contemporary artists working in a range of mediums, the exhibit encourages viewers to consider their relationships with each other and the animals with whom we share our lives. Each artist has interpreted ‘companion’ in her own way, and we think the resulting exhibit is powerful, thought-provoking and fascinating.

** Seattle printmaker Dawn Endean, states that she is drawn to dogs’ vulnerability – to how “dependent they are on the luck of the draw. They accept their lot; often with joy, loyalty and sweetness… and give back a hundred fold.” Her emotional images are made with intricate layering of intaglio plates, monoprinting and collage.

** Dara Daniel of northern California, looks back through history at our human capacity to connect with animals, particularly horses, who have been companions, escorts, guides and even counterparts to their human friends. She paints horses because their souls are beautiful to look at while expressing excitement, joy and spirit.

** With her distinctive voice, Susan Mattson has expressed for years, the close connection between human and non-human beings. Her sculptural clay vessels often depict animals with bodies covered by a mass human faces. Are we separate or are we life-companions? How do our actions affect every other being on this planet? Can we learn from our companions? Who is in charge?

** We are sharing our journey of life on Earth with uncountable species. Betsey Hurd believes, as do many indigenous peoples of Earth, that we are all one. No separation of species. Where does one of us end and another begin? What exactly is our connection? Hurd’s polymorphic fabulism pieces are about the integration of species. And … as a horse-woman and experienced artist, Betsey’s horse-beings are often the subject of her ceramic sculptures, along with other beings like deer, dogs, cats, bison and birds.

BODY 2019 Opens May 10th

“BODY 2019″ opens May 10th with a fabulous & elegant opening reception

Models wearing the art … live music by the Amazing Graces … wine and appetizers … and most importantly, fabulous art jewelry (think Mother’s Day gifts) and figurative paintings and sculpture.

Opening night is May 10th and the exhibit runs through June 15th. 

Please join us Friday evening, May 10. Be the first to see and try on some of the art! We have incredible new jewelry pieces by Lori Blaylock, Bonnie Lambert, Paul Guillemette, SarahJess Swann, Judy Kline, Pyper Hugos and Dave Barnes. We introduce jewelry artists new to us: Clare Clum, Ken Bova and Beth Gregory. And we welcome back sculptor, Nancy Goughnour and painter, Elizabeth Hughes Bass with their works on the walls of the gallery.

Where: 1+1=1 Gallery is located at 434 North Last Chance Gulch in Helena, Montana.

Who: Because we must observe occupancy laws, during the Spring Art Walk, we will be limiting the number of visitors inside the gallery at any given time. If the gallery is too full when you come by, please visit the other shops in the 400 block and come back in a bit. Without huge crowds in the gallery, you will be able to view and enjoy the art much better. Thanks for understanding.

Featured Artists’ in TWO during the Spring Art Walk

We are hosting an extra special evening for the Downtown Helena Spring Art Walk on May 10th

On the evening of May 10, we are opening three shows: BODY III, our third annual figurative art and art jewelry exhibit, in addition to two solo shows by Linda McCray and Patty Ceglio in Gallery TWO. 

From May 10th through 30th, we are featuring Linda McCray and Patty Ceglio in gallery TWO. Both are Helena artists who have been showing at 1+1=1 Gallery for years. Patty Ceglio was one of the first artists we exhibited, beginning with “SIX” almost five years ago. Her ceramic art has evolved along with her skills. This time, Patty has a solo show of her highly-textured cups and mugs. Linda McCray, a longtime Helena resident, artist and designer, brings a new series of her ethereal, spiritually-based paintings to her solo show at TWO.

 

 

We invite you to join us on May 18 from 11 to 4pm (just drop in anytime) for an Open House at 1+1=1 Gallery. Here’s your chance to meet and talk with our TWO artists, in a friendly — warm — and informal atmosphere. VESSEL Opens March 22

“VESSEL” opens March 22nd with an opening reception

We are excited and delighted to bring you our second group exhibit of the year titled, VESSEL.

Vessels metaphorical or literal, decorative and functional, ceramic, wood or ink on paper … vases, cups, plates, sculptures, bowls, mugs and some that refuse to be defined. Vessels you will recognize immediately and others you will have to ponder.

Opening night is March 22nd

Please join us Friday evening, March 22, so you can be the first to see our artists’ fabulous interpretations of the vessel theme. Local and regional artists have been hard at work making pieces for months.  We welcome back some of our long-time artists Trudy Skari, John Andrew, Sarah Magar, Maureen Cole and Laurie Shaman, who have each developed a strong following in Helena. We also welcome a handful of artists whom we have introduced recently, and whose work we hope you will grow to love and collect. SarahJess Swann, Andrew Rivera, Molly Rivera, Eliza Weber, Boyd Carson and Becky Street.

Expect to be surprised, delighted and moved by this group of vessels.

This year's Small Works Gift Show opened at 1+1=1 Gallery to a big crowd of enthusiastic shoppers and art lovers. Friday night and Saturday saw dozens of small and affordable artworks gift wrapped and heading out the gallery door. We are so happy to feel supported by the Helena community -- and to in turn, give our artists the motivation to keep working in their studios! Why Ritual?

Ritual. Isn’t that something we should save for special days?  Why not create more meaning in everyday activities? Rituals slow us down, connect us with the origins of things and the underlying beauty of all life.  From cooking and eating … to lighting a candle; placing flowers in a vase; drinking coffee, tea, ale or wine; bathing and brushing teeth; meditation and prayer; telling stories and tucking children or ourselves in bed … these are things we may do everyday and — if done with intention — can become wonderful meaningful moments for us.

Nine local and regional ceramic artists submitted a large selection of functional clay objects that can be used in our everyday life. Bowls, plates, cups, cookie jars, mugs, trays, vases and tumblers are just a few. Everything in the exhibit is beautiful enough to be displayed as a work of art … and useful enough to become part of your everyday life.

“SCULPTURE: Inside, Around and Between Ideas” starts June 29th with an opening reception

Our next show opens June 29th and runs through July 28th. It’s a short exhibit but long on diversity and depth. We asked five Helena artists, as well as an artist from Wyoming and a California artist, to contribute a body of sculptural works to this show. These seven artists explore volume, space and ideas using clay, bronze, wood and mixed-media. And whoah – are we excited to see what’s been coming in!

Think Sculpture is Just for Tables and Shelves?

Our 2018 Sculpture show promises to astound and delight you with pieces for your walls, floors, ceilings, shelves or tables. Whether you have a small wall space, a coffee table, hearth, mantle, side tables or shelves in need of a statement piece or a tender, quieter piece, we will have something for everyone. Paul Guillemette’s pieces are free-standing, wall-mounted or hanging from the ceiling. Nancy Goughnour again delights us with all-new wall figures of strong bold women. Trudy Skari’s latest free-standing and wall pieces take her bemusing foxes, bears and rabbits to another level of accomplishment. Mary Jane Edwards’s body of 12 “Caged Memories” provoke thought and curiosity. New polymorphic fabulism figures by Betsey Hurd join her masterful bronze equine sculptures.
