About back40prints, a collaboration between printmakers Larry Calkins & Becky Street

Larry Calkin’s animal cutouts are inspired by his own menagerie that he knows and loves. The shapes are simple, yet he captures the personalities and quirks of each animal with understanding of their behaviors.

Becky Street has honed her sense of color, pattern and composition over a 40-year career in Interior Design. In 20015 she began applying these design elements to printmaking. Her work has been exhibited at Columbia City Gallery in Seattle and the Gallery at Flat Rock in NC.

Between the two artists, a fascinating collaborative print endeavor has evolved. Larry hands over dozens of cutouts to Becky, who is an experienced printmaker. Becky adds color, pattern and repetition to create a narrative for each piece. Together, Larry and Becky have produced a collection of monoprints and drypoints from the charming and often humorous shapes that make up the back40print collection.

Larry Calkins grew up in Harlan, Oregon, where his family has lived for five generations. He worked in the photo industry before turning to making art full time. Currently his work is shown in galleries across the US. He is an art instructor at Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle. Larry and his wife live on Tiger Mountain with a beloved menagerie including mules, chickens, dogs and cats.

Becky Street spent much of her childhood in St. Louis, Missouri on the back of a horse. When she was not riding, she began drawing and painting in the home of a neighboring artist. This began her love affair with both animals and art. Becky currently lives in Seattle, WA where she is a printmaker at Pratt Fine Arts Center.
