About Carla

I grew up on a remote island in Southeast Alaska. The dramatic landscape and relentless rain served up plenty of food for my imagination. While pursuing a degree in dance a sculpture class helped me realize that working with my hands was a more readily available skill and provided me with a more flexible lifestyle which included my desire to have a family. My Bachelor of Arts degree is from Humboldt State University in California.

Returning to Alaska after school, I taught at the University of Alaska Ketchikan Campus and in many public schools as an artist in residence. A small private ceramics school and private lessons in my studio have always been a part of my artistic practice. I had the privilege of working alongside artists Roberto Salas and Ray Troll on some wonderful mural projects including a residency at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I exhibited art in solo and group exhibitions in galleries all over the country and at all of the major museums in the state of Alaska. When my boys were grown I came south for a residency at the Archie Bray Foundation. That rich experience piqued my desire to pursue an MFA at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. While I was there I made a dramatic shift in my work. The work that illustrated the sexy intertidal landscape of my Island home gave way to an exploration of figurative work. This work examines the underlying subject matter of my earlier work in a more direct and critical format. Currently that work has evolved into a comic narrative of relationships. I now reside in Helena Montana making and exhibiting art.
