Paul Blumenthal

During the last three years, I have focused on learning to read my marks and following my intuition, creating paintings and watercolors that stand on their own without reference to “real life/reality”.  The sign in the 1+1=1 education area is now my mantra: “Don’t Think, Paint”.

My recent work is consumed with composition/balance, emotion, and intuitively drawing with paint to achieve these goals.  I believe expression and emotion are key to my work.  In addition, I am interested in creating surprises for the viewer.

Art does not to reproduce the visible, it renders visible.”  ~Paul Klee

Artist Statement

I have been traveling and creating drawings and paintings since 1984.  I draw and paint landscapes, real and imagined, while immersed in a place.  There, I spend time drawing and painting, building on the honest observation of light, form, texture, and color. My process for creating art is to draw in situ, not looking through a camera, but rather through my mind’s eye using all the senses and instilling emotional content. I carry a drawing tablet on walks, creating studies, which are developed into works that retain the rawness and power of initial impressions.

During the last three years, I have focused on learning to read my marks and following my intuition, creating paintings and watercolors that stand on their own without reference to “real life/reality”.  The sign in the 1+1=1 education area is now my mantra: “Don’t Think, Paint”.  My recent work (Teton Zowie, Scapegoat 01, Power Line 1.0 and Power Line 2.0 aspire to this) is consumed with composition/balance, emotion, and intuitively drawing with paint to achieve these goals.  I believe expression and emotion are key to my work.  In addition, I am interested in creating surprises for the viewer.

A native of Houston, Texas, I have been living in Montana since 1995 and raised three stepsons (Andrew, Ian, and Brychan) for 25 years and work as an Architect for the State of Montana.  I have traveled extensively in Mexico, India, Southern Europe, and the Middle East interpreting the environment and culture through painting, drawing and mixed media collage.  The resulting works have been exhibited throughout the United States and Israel.
