Helena is a ceramic town, anchored by the Archie Bray and augmented by art galleries and the Holter. We offer some of the most unique, creative pottery and ceramic sculpture in Helena through 1+1=1 Gallery exhibitions. We strive to show a mix of affordable clay by emerging artists and collector's ceramics by more experienced potters and sculptors. Come see what we have! Featuring clay art by Susan Mattson, Nancy Goughnour, Carla Potter, Maureen Cole, Trudy Skari, Gregg Edelen, Andrew Rivera, Eliza Weber, Wendy Anderson, Betsey Hurd, Bruce Kitts and others.
In the small street-facing gallery window this month is a two-person show by Paul Guillemette and Michele Landsaat.
Paul Guillemette uses found objects, repurposed pieces of wood and natural objects he finds near his Los Angeles studio. His fabulous, colorful jewelry is popular in the big cities, and we happen to know it's very popular in Helena Montana! Necklaces, earrings, bracelets rings and cuffs ... there is bound to be the perfect piece of body-decor whether you are a diva who wants to command attention, or more subdued and just like to decorate your ears.
Michele Landsaat has shown in several exhibits at 1+1=1 and we hope know you will be as charmed as we are with her fragile-seeming, delicate etchings illustrating profound stories. Her prints are each pulled from an etching press by hand, and made in very limited editions. Michele comes from a background of bookmaking and writing. The stories she creates speak to an underlying and universal vulnerability, yet they are simultaneously whimsical in nature.
Seattle Artists Take Over our Large Gallery Window
What a delightful combination we have displayed in this month's street-facing window exhibit! Caroline Davis' contemporary jewelry and Dawn Endean's monoprint/etchings.
Caroline Davis, a jewelry artist from Seattle, is relatively new to 1+1=1 Gallery. She debuted at the gallery during our 2021 BODY exhibit this spring. So many of our visitors were blown away by her gorgeous designs, we made the decision to continue to carry her work year round. Caroline Davis is otherwise known as "CREO." Her work is contemporary, minimalist, gorgeous and carefully crafted with attention to detail. Come in to try on, or just go for it online!
Dawn Endean has been showing with 1+1=1 for several years and has gained in popularity and collectibility in our Montana market during that time. We are featuring her one-off (monprints) of dogs in relatable situations. (Do you have a dog who tried to take a mile when you give him an inch? Do you have a "Good Dog?" If you are a dog lover, or a printmaking lover, make sure to check out Dawn Endean's work. We also have several of the artist's tiny collages made from printmaking castoffs (something I myself do often) in small white frames.
Miles City Family Ranch to Helena Art Gallery: Debbie Smith
We are delighted to introduce the Helena Community to one of our favorite artists, Debbie Smith. Her whimsical mixed-fiber-media sculptures have become so popular we decided to offer her the solo exhibit space in our large front window. Don't miss seeing her lighthearted corvids and "Guardians" in this 24-hours-a-day 7-days-a-week show! Her artwork will continue to be available through our Online Gallery Store for the rest of 2021
Chip Clawson, long time resident of Helena, Montana, is our Featured Window Artist this month!
We are absolutely delighted to give our Helena community an opportunity to see Chip Clawson's most recent work using a 3D printer, in addition to his decorative outdoor ceramic planters. Chip has installed a gorgeous, colorful exhibit in our large front window. The solo exhibit is available to view 24 hours a day - seven days a week, and all of Clawson's artworks are for sale in our online store or in person. Make sure to check out his artwork as you stroll downtown, and come in during gallery hours to see them up close and personal. Been missing Trudy's Foxes?
So have we. Trudy has been showing foxes and other ceramic creatures at 1+1=1 Gallery since we opened 7 years ago. Hundreds of Montana art-lovers have adopted at least one of her exquisite playful creatures. Trudy has honed her spontaneous, intuitive sculpting process over the years, exploring the characteristics and behavior of these curious canine relatives. Her poetic titles give a glimpse into Trudy's mind and provide a philosophical touch to her whimsical pieces.

It's Something New
During the first year of the pandemic, we reduced the size of our gallery exhibit floor to about two thirds the size it was during the first 7 years as a fine art gallery. We added a new classroom in the back portion of the gallery (anytime you stop by, feel free to peek into the classroom) and we transitioned the front windows of the gallery into two smaller exhibitions for one or two artists at a time. These window exhibitions rotate about every 3 to 4 weeks, face the street and are available for viewing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week! This is something we decided to do for our community, to extend the gallery outside of our physical walls, and make artwork in a wide range of prices available for all to see, appreciate and buy. We are also happy to take you downstairs into what we can "Grandma's Basement" where you can browse through our art storage area to discover "hidden" art treasures not exhibited up on the gallery floor. Just ask us!
40 in 4D features forty digital paintings by four diverse artists, all revealed in the gallery using augmented reality.
The exhibit runs from Sep 27 through Nov 9, 2019
Opening Night of our newest exhibit, 40 in 4d, is September 27th — which coincides with our 6th Anniversary as a fine art gallery as well as two solo shows in GalleryTWO behind the main exhibit floor at 1+1=1. We hope to see you this weekend!
1+1=1 Gallery will be showcasing an experimental interactive exhibit with four digital artists. “40 in 4D” opens September 27th with an evening reception at which the four artists will give a panel-style talk about their work and the interactive features of their paintings. Visitors will be able to see the artist’s process of painting each of the 40 paintings!
Traditional 2d artwork sits on a wall. 3d art may move in and out from the wall’s surface. In this exhibit, 40 in 4D, the artists use augmented reality to reveal their process, peeling back the paintings from the final result to the first digital brush or pencil stroke. Visitors will walk into 1+1=1 Gallery and see right there on the walls, the process behind all 40 paintings in the show.
Dan Cohen, Portland OR
Ryan Johnson, New York City
Andy Lunday, Portland OR
Gabe Shaughnessy, Portland OR
Lunday and Shaughnessy grew up in Helena and reside in Portland Oregon. Cohen also lives in Portland and Johnson is a New York City artist. Their exhibit at 1+1=1 is the first time the group has shown their paintings with the custom augmented reality app, 4D, developed by Shaughnessy.
Please join us for a very special exhibit opening night and anniversary celebration on Friday evening, September 27th from 5 to 8pm. Our openings are always fun opportunities to meet the artists and hear about their inspirations, motivations and methods. This time we have an even better opportunity for gallery visitors! The four 4D artists will give a panel-style talk Friday evening from 5:30 to 6 and will be available after the talk to show visitors how to use the custom-developed augmented reality app to view their paintings.
Saturday, September 28 there will be an Open House at the gallery, to meet the artists who will be available for questions, demonstrations of their painting methods and the custom app for the show. Come learn in a quieter atmosphere.
