October Window Exhibit Featured Artists

In the small street-facing gallery window this month is a two-person show by Caroline Davis and Sandi Bransford, both from the Puget Sound in Washington state. Davis brings considerable skill and creativity to her metalsmithing, creating elegant yet affordable and unique jewelry. Bransford uses ceramic, natural objects, paints and patinas to achieve her organic textural figures. Read more about these two artists and see their new work. See something you like while you're strolling by at 11pm or before downtown wakes up? Just scan the QR code in the window and grab it before it's gone!

Small Window Exhibit Features Paul Guillemette and Michele Landsaat

In the small street-facing gallery window this month is a two-person show by Paul Guillemette and Michele Landsaat.

Paul Guillemette uses found objects, repurposed pieces of wood and natural objects he finds near his Los Angeles studio. His fabulous, colorful jewelry is popular in the big cities, and we happen to know it's very popular in Helena Montana! Necklaces, earrings, bracelets rings and cuffs ... there is bound to be the perfect piece of body-decor whether you are a diva who wants to command attention, or more subdued and just like to decorate your ears.

Michele Landsaat has shown in several exhibits at 1+1=1 and we hope know you will be as charmed as we are with her fragile-seeming, delicate etchings illustrating profound stories. Her prints are each pulled from an etching press by hand, and made in very limited editions. Michele comes from a background of bookmaking and writing. The stories she creates speak to an underlying and universal vulnerability, yet they are simultaneously whimsical in nature.

COMPANION: Perspectives on a Shared Life

COMPANION: Perspectives on a Shared Life features diverse artworks by four artists

The exhibit runs from Aug 9 through Sep 14, 2019

Shop Companion in Our Online Catalog

Please join us for an opening on Friday evening, Aug 9th from 5 to 8pm. Our openings are fun opportunities to meet the artists and hear about their inspirations, motivations and methods. We’ll serve beer, wine, cold beverages and lots of delicious appetizers and desserts.

COMPANION features the work of four contemporary artists working in a range of mediums, the exhibit encourages viewers to consider their relationships with each other and the animals with whom we share our lives. Each artist has interpreted ‘companion’ in her own way, and we think the resulting exhibit is powerful, thought-provoking and fascinating.

** Seattle printmaker Dawn Endean, states that she is drawn to dogs’ vulnerability – to how “dependent they are on the luck of the draw. They accept their lot; often with joy, loyalty and sweetness… and give back a hundred fold.” Her emotional images are made with intricate layering of intaglio plates, monoprinting and collage.

** Dara Daniel of northern California, looks back through history at our human capacity to connect with animals, particularly horses, who have been companions, escorts, guides and even counterparts to their human friends. She paints horses because their souls are beautiful to look at while expressing excitement, joy and spirit.

** With her distinctive voice, Susan Mattson has expressed for years, the close connection between human and non-human beings. Her sculptural clay vessels often depict animals with bodies covered by a mass human faces. Are we separate or are we life-companions? How do our actions affect every other being on this planet? Can we learn from our companions? Who is in charge?

** We are sharing our journey of life on Earth with uncountable species. Betsey Hurd believes, as do many indigenous peoples of Earth, that we are all one. No separation of species. Where does one of us end and another begin? What exactly is our connection? Hurd’s polymorphic fabulism pieces are about the integration of species. And … as a horse-woman and experienced artist, Betsey’s horse-beings are often the subject of her ceramic sculptures, along with other beings like deer, dogs, cats, bison and birds.

COMPANION runs through September 14th. Stop by 1+1=1 Gallery anytime we’re open and see the show in person!

Artists in TWO, May 10-30

Featured Artists’ in TWO during the Spring Art Walk

Linda McCray and Patty Ceglio

We are hosting an extra special evening for the Downtown Helena Spring Art Walk on May 10th

On the evening of May 10, we are opening three shows: BODY III, our third annual figurative art and art jewelry exhibit, in addition to two solo shows by Linda McCray and Patty Ceglio in Gallery TWO.

From May 10th through 30th, we are featuring Linda McCray and Patty Ceglio in gallery TWO. Both are Helena artists who have been showing at 1+1=1 Gallery for years. Patty Ceglio was one of the first artists we exhibited, beginning with “SIX” almost five years ago. Her ceramic art has evolved along with her skills. This time, Patty has a solo show of her highly-textured cups and mugs. Linda McCray, a longtime Helena resident, artist and designer, brings a new series of her ethereal, spiritually-based paintings to her solo show at TWO.

We invite you to join us on May 18 from 11 to 4pm (just drop in anytime) for an Open House at 1+1=1 Gallery. Here’s your chance to meet and talk with our TWO artists, in a friendly — warm — and informal atmosphere. Linda McCray will be at the gallery on May 18th to talk about her meditative process and inspiration.

Come on downtown Saturday, April 20, anytime between 11 and 4

Join us for goodies and beverages during our Open House. Morning treats and hot drinks from 11 to 2.  Wine and grazing boards from 2 to 4.

Family friendly

Bring your kids. Come meet our gallery dog, Shadow! Call 406-431-9931 for more information.

TWO is a new concept for 1+1=1 this year.

Changes at 1+1=1 Gallery

In early 2019, we renamed part of our Back Gallery and made it a place to celebrate and shine a spotlight on just two of our represented artists at a time. The space is now called “TWO.” Every artist we represent will have a chance to prominently show a body of their work once a year with a reception or open house. We’re very excited about this change to how we introduce you to our artists and their newest fabulous artwork. In addition to TWO, the other part of our Back Gallery continues to show a sampling of work by many of the artists represented by and associated with 1+1=1. Come in as often as you wish — you are likely to find new artworks every time you stop by.

Artists in TWO, April 13 – 26, 2019

Open House Saturday April 20th, 2019, to celebrate Bonnie Lambert & Erika James

You are invited to join us at 1+1=1 Gallery anytime during the day from 11 to 4, to meet Bonnie Lambert and enjoy her fabulous art jewelry along with a second solo show by Erika James of Portland, Oregon. This month, from April 13 through 26, we are featuring necklaces by Bonnie Lambert and atmospheric encaustic paintings by Erika James.

Helena artist, Bonnie Lambert is known for her unique art-jewelry as well as her constructed large-scale photographs. In TWO this month, Bonnie is displaying her necklaces made from found objects, natural materials such as gourds, oak galls and minerals with semi-precious stones, one-off beads, chocolate and wine foils and vintage silks. Erika James, of Portland, Oregon, makes moody abstract landscapes with encaustic wax. You must see her Columbia Gorge, Pacific beaches and mountain lakes up close and personal to truly get the experience of her encaustic paintings. We are absolutely delighted to have these two on our artist roster and hope you will be too, when you see their new work.

We invite you to join us on April 20th from 11 to 4pm (just drop in anytime) for an Open House at 1+1=1 Gallery!

We want to offer our Helena visitors a chance to meet and talk with our TWO artists, in a friendly — warm — and calm atmosphere. Bonnie Lambert will be at the gallery on April 20, to show some of her materials and converse informally about her inspirations for art jewelry. Get inspired by the way she collects objects that normally would not be used in wearable-art, on her travels and gathering trips. Ask questions, examine her necklaces and find the perfect gift for a stylish friend, spouse or parent!

Come on downtown Saturday, April 20, anytime between 11 and 4

Join us for goodies and beverages during our Open House. Hot Cross Buns, Maureen’s own Savory Strata, Peach Mimosas, French press coffee and tea all morning until 1 or 2pm. Wine and artsy grazing boards from 2 to 4. What’s not to love about our open houses? It’s casual. Fun. Engaging. Delicious. Educational. And … a great place to find a Mother’s Day gift a little ahead of time!

Family friendly

Bring your kids. Come meet our gallery dog, Shadow! Call 406-431-9931 for more information.

BODY: 2nd Annual Art Jewelry and Figurative Art Show

BODY 2018: Annual Art Jewelry & Figurative Art Invitational

May 25 – June 23, 2018

Running from May 25 through June 23 this year, BODY will focus on one-of-a-kind art jewelry and unique contemporary figurative artworks (woodcuts, embroidery, oil paintings and ceramic vessels.) Please join us Friday evening, May 25th for an opening reception and to meet the artists.

Figurative art can often affirm us, push our buttons, inspire or disturb us. Figurative artists challenge us with their reflections on gender and human bodies to think about ourselves with awareness, tenderness, acceptance and even forgiveness. Ouida Touchon of New Mexico, Laurie Shaman of Illinois, Kate Fisher of New York, and Elizabeth Hughes Bass of Butte Montana, are the featured figurative artists this year.

Art jewelry sometimes pushes the boundaries of what we may think of as ornament for our bodies. We have invited jewelry artists whose studio jewelry is unique, contemporary or traditional, to be part of the show. Montana and national jewelry artists will be featured. We have art jewelers who work with fabric, felt, ribbon, paper and found objects, botanicals, silver, gold and other precious metals, stones, semi-precious stones, fossils, clay and natural objects, along with vintage and antique buttons and beads. You never know, we might even end up with some jewelry featuring tiny vintage toys. Come see the incredible variety and fabulousness!

The opening reception of our last exhibit of the year is always a festive party
and a great opportunity to do your holiday shopping — or just get ideas the first night.
Come back anytime before Christmas to check off your gift list.

What are Small Works? Why Shop Small? Why Art?

  • Small works are sometimes small or sometimes just simpler than the artist’s usual work.
  • Small works are affordable.
  • Small works don’t always fit in your pocket but sometimes they do.
  • Small works make very cool gifts for someone you love. Cuz small works are original. Art. Not made in China.
  • Small works are made by your friends, your neighbors, people you know and folks you really need to meet.
  • Buying small works to give as a gift — or for your own self — well that just an admirable thing to do.
  • When you buy handmade original art from a local artist, you are helping someone from our community make a living doing what they love to do.
  • Our gallery is dedicated to making opportunities for artists of all experience levels, so they can thrive and therefore work their magic on all of us.
Consider doing your gift shopping this holiday season at small locally owned businesses that support artists. Can you imagine your city without Art?
