Wood & Wax Exhibit and Opening Night

A big thank you to everyone who came downtown for the opening reception of Wood & Wax 2018!

That was one of the best attended openings we’ve had since we started 1+1=1 Gallery. Just. Wow! What a great way to celebrate our 5th anniversary as a gallery — and to proudly show off the work of the seven encaustic and woodworking artists in the exhibit. We are so glad and so lucky to have the support of many members of the Helena community. Thanks again to you all!

Whether you were able to come in person to the opening night, or sometime before November 24th, when this show comes down, you are welcome to check out the exhibit pieces in our online catalog. If you are interested in a piece (or more than one) please click the “inquire” button by that piece and ask any question, on the note that pops up. We’ll get right back to you. We are happy to make flexible payment arrangements, and we ship just about anywhere. Thank you for your support.

Introducing our online catalog for Wood & Wax 2018:

As we try to do after every opening, we are posting some photos from the evening festivities:

Flight exhibit opens Friday evening, April 20

Please join us at 1+1=1 Gallery for the opening reception of our newest exhibit, Flight, on Friday, April 20th from 5 to 8pm.

This fabulous exhibit features all new works by 14 artists who’ve approached the theme of flight in their own distinct way, using many mediums including printmaking, clay, acrylic and oils, encaustic, wood, and charcoal. We invite our Montana friends and neighbors to experience these unique and thoughtfully created works, listen to a panel-style artist talk and enjoy refreshments from 5-8pm on Friday, April 20th.

Artists invited to participate in this show include Andrea Cross Guns, Linda McCray, Ouida Touchon, Darla Myers, Cristina Marian, Dan McArdle, Tina Albro, Becky Street, Larry Calkins, Laurie Shaman, Peter Shaughnessy, Trudy Skari, Brenda Wolf and April Coppini.

Maureen Shaughnessy remarks, “It took me 10 minutes of free association to come up with a list of 120 words or phrases associated with the word ‘flight.’ Words like wingding, arrow, acrobat, flight of fancy, stairway, invention, sky charts, flock, nest, dragonfly, vertigo, voyage, fly-fishing, sailboat, birds of a feather, you get the idea. I didn’t even scratch the surface of the almost infinite ideas about flight. I’m so excited to see how these fourteen artists explore this theme!”

Flight runs from April 20 through May 19. 1+1=1 Gallery is located at 434 N. Last Chance Gulch. Spring is here and we have new extended hours: Tues-Fri 10am-6pm and Sat 10am-5pm

In these Introduction to Encaustic Painting workshops, you will learn the history of encaustic painting and it’s current resurgence as a painting medium. Instructor demonstrations, examples, as well as lots of student painting time allow for hands-on learning. This workshop covers exploring painting techniques with encaustic, fusing and layering. It also includes demonstration of collage and toner-based image transfers specific to encaustic painting. Other topics include choosing encaustic materials, studio setup, safety considerations and care of encaustic artworks.

Some painting experience is suggested but not required. Individual creativity and experimentation is encouraged while learning to paint with the molten wax (encaustic.) Darla is an excellent teacher as well as experienced artists. She provides a professional, creative, fun and encouraging learning experience for all.

Workshop supplies include: two 10×10 birch plywood panels (to paint on) encaustic paint and oil sticks, encaustic medium, collage and image transfer materials.

Wear comfortable shoes, as you may be standing much of the day. Dress comfortably in clothes you don’t mind messing up — you could drip wax on your clothes and it’s hard to get out!

No loose clothing (sleeves) or hair as you will be using torches. We will have working aprons and gloves available.

Darla Myers

Instructor Darla Myers lives in Bozeman where she has her own studio and teaches workshops. She is represented in Helena by 1+1=1 Gallery.  Darla will be one of two featured encaustic artists in an upcoming October 2017 exhibit, titled “Wood and Wax.”
