TWO is a new concept for 1+1=1 this year.

Changes at 1+1=1 Gallery

In early 2019, we renamed part of our Back Gallery and made it a place to celebrate and shine a spotlight on just two of our represented artists at a time. The space is now called “TWO.” Every artist we represent will have a chance to prominently show a body of their work once a year with a reception or open house. We’re very excited about this change to how we introduce you to our artists and their newest fabulous artwork. In addition to TWO, the other part of our Back Gallery continues to show a sampling of work by many of the artists represented by and associated with 1+1=1. Come in as often as you wish — you are likely to find new artworks every time you stop by.

Best Way to Mount Paper on Wood Panel

Problem: How to mount a heavy paper artwork to a large wood panel without making it all crooked and leaving bubbles and stuff?

I live with a problem solver.

My husband (and fellow artist) loves solving problems so much that sometimes I have to remind him I don’t need all my problems solved. Mostly I love that Tim has the kind of mind that creatively solves just about anything that needs solving.

For instance, how to glue down a painting or mixed media piece — straight — onto a cradled wood panel without bubbles, buckles and wrinkles. Evenly. So it will stay forever. Archivally. And without messing it up. I used to get so frustrated with this part of art-making … until Tim showed me his way(which he figured out because he glues wood veneers all the time.)

Problem Solved!

I bet there are lots of artists out there who would appreciate this simple, almost fool-proof way to attach paper to panel. So I took videos for you! This is Tim attaching my sister’s paintings to cradled wood panels he custom made for her. Let me know if these demos help (by commenting,) or if you have another method that works and want to share it, please do! Thanks for reading and watching. Good success to you. 😀

Scroll below video for more about this method…
Use this method for:

…anything you want to attach to cradled wood panels or plain wood panels that has to be put on straight and even. I have used this method to glue layers of paper to the panels, then painted and added other media afterwards. My sister and I both sometimes paint on large 200 or 300# papers, then glue down onto panels. This method can also be used to glue heavy-weight paper prints (etchings, monoprints, etc) to large cradled panels (so you don’t need frames — yay!)

suggested Supplies:
  • Archival contact cement – comes in large cans
  • Glue brush
  • Tiny dowels: we use 1/8 or 1/4 inch dowels cut long enough to work with many sizes of large panels
  • Clean brayer to roll over the top of your print

Printmaking Demo Saturday Sep 29

Press Here: a Printmakers Showcase is a gorgeous exhibit with original artwork by 10 printmakers. We have had so many folks asking about the process, after seeing the monoprint, etchings, woodcuts and collagraphs in person, that we decided to have a demonstration in the art studio at the back of the exhibit space.

So … if you are in Helena on Saturday morning, September 29, we have a fun, educational and magical printmaking demo for you!

Stop by Maureen Shaughnessy‘s art studio at 434 North Last Chance Gulch in Helena (back of gallery) to learn something about her drypoint and collagraph printmaking process.

Maureen will be working on a new drypoint etching plate and printing some monoprint/collagraphs on her press. It’s always fascinating to see this magical process as it’s happening. Ask questions. Observe. Drop in for as short or long a time as you wish. It’s all free.

After you watch the demo, head out to our exhibit space to compare what you see in the studio to the diverse prints on the walls by 10 different artists. Our current show, Press Here: a Printmakers Showcase is on view until October 13.

    • What: Free printmaking demo
    • When: Saturday September 29th 11:30am to 2:00pm
    • Where: 1+1=1 Gallery at 434 North Last Chance Gulch
    • Who: Anyone who wants to learn a little something

4th Annual Hygge Open House

Well, we are making our Hygge Open House a true Helena tradition. Every year we’ve offered this fun event, attendance has grown and folks are telling us they look forward to it! Our hope is that by next year, all of downtown Helena will take part in an annual mid-winter Hygge Festival.

This year, our 1+1=1 Gallery Hygge Open House is just one daySaturday, Feb. 3rd from 10 to 5 — designed to get you out of your cabin (we know you have the fever) … safely over the ice and down to the gallery to enjoy some delicious homemade warm food, hot drinks, energetic live music, a special presentation by a special guest about Hygge and a coffee tasting, a fascinating wood carving demonstration and a peek at the brand new printmaking studio we’ve been working hard on all January. Don’t miss this event. We will be so happy to see you on the 3rd!

Warm your bellies
Warm your hands
Warm your hearts

Maybe we’ll generate enough warmth with hygge, to melt our icy streets!

Drop in to the gallery anytime on Saturday and be surprised by what you find! Ask us about hygge. Experience it. Listen to a special guest talk about Denmark and hygge. Take in our current art exhibit. I’d say “chill out with us” but it will be anything but chilly at 1+1=1 that day. See you.
